A response to my Pokemon article

I Recently received a comment to my article about the history and origins of Pokemon. The young man who made the comment clearly did not realize I was writing about the card game that predated the computer games. I've decided to respond to his comments here.
"Have you ever played a pokemon game? If not, then you have no right to bash pokemon"
Have you ever injected heroin into your veins? Have you ever molested a child? Have you ever tortured a pet who trusted you? Have you ever stolen a car? By your own logic, this means you're in no position to criticize any of these obviously immoral, illegal and criminal actions. Without the ability to judge the virtue of actions we ourselves have not committed, we would be unable to function as a society. We would dissolve into chaos, crime and violence, leaving behind not a civilization and acts of virtue, but the smoldering remains of an orgy of destruction.

I prefer the ability to make moral judgments to the kind of chaos and destruction you seem to be advocating.

"As there are only 493 different pokemon, I'd like to know where your 3000 come into play"
The text was meant to say "a 3,000 year old pagan religion." Thank you for noticing the typo.

"As far as I know, people really jsut buy coins to get Porygon. I don't know anyone who ENJOYS the slots."
The original article was written about the card game, not the computer game. At the time I wrote the article, there was a significant gambling component to the card game. I was, in fact, the whole POINT of the game. The only ways to gain more Pokemon was to buy cards or win them in the game. It sounds like the gambling component of Pokemon was reduced for the computer games that came later, but replaced with virtual slot machines.

I find this abhorrent. The card game teaches kids to find card gambling to be fun, while according to you the computer games teach kids to favor "one armed bandits."

Pokemon is short for pocket monsters and that is the official, and truthful, explanation."
You're half right, It is the "official" definition.

"This is Ryuutakeshi, the Dragon Warrior, signing off.

Ryuutakeshi: Vice President of his forensics team, actor in seven plays thus far, black belt in Taekwon-do, Harry Potter trivia master, and all around nerd.

Pokemon hasn't harmed me. How has it harmed you?"
I've bolded a few portions of your comment above. I don't think I need to do more than that to counter your claim that Pokemon has done you no damage.

Wow, it never fails to amaze me how hopelessly fucked in the head some people like you are. Besides, Pokemon is a passe fad; let it go.

Oh wait, hopelessly fucked in the head people can't let anything go, and only see things their way. Never mind.

Pokemon was first a Gameboy game, then an anime, THEN a card game. If you're going to claim that something is the work of Satan, at least get your fucking facts straight.

My level 46 Charizard can kick you're Squirtle's ass, by the way.

And no, I haven't played Pokemon since the 90's, which was THE LAST TIME IT WAS FUCKING RELEVENT.

Get laid, dude. Don't go and bash children's games.

LAWL.
We can criticize these things because these are immoral actions- not because they are fucking video games.

"The Pokémon TCG was created by Media Factory in Japan. It was first released in Japan in 1996. Wizards of the Coast, seeing a great opportunity to ride the new Pokémon wave, was licensed the game and introduced Pokémon TCG to North America in 1999."

"Originally released as a pair of interlinkable Game Boy role-playing video games, Pokémon has since become the second most successful and lucrative video game-based media franchise in the world, behind only Nintendo's own Mario series."

Methinks you need to get your facts straight before bashing someone smarter than you. :)

I'd make more comments about how you are wrong, but i am much too lazy.

what's so wrong with being a nerd? This guy's smarter, more fit, and more mentally stable than you are. Get over yourself.

Ryuutakeshi said...

Interesting, Mr. Cornswalled. I'm surprised to have actually found a response. Thank you. I hate being ignored.

Well, as stated before the TCG in fact came after the games, since the games are the original concept. And to attack the TCG for being satanic is to call the entire franchise satanic. Otherwise we have a dreaded double standard.

Now, I took offense to some of your statements, not that you care. I see no reason to feel disgraced that I am a nerd. As Bill Gates, the biggest, richest nerd in the world once said, "Be nice to nerds. You'll end up working for one someday." So... yeah. Also, Dragon Warrior? You took offense to my nickname? Coupled with your obvious dislike for Harry Potter I'd say you are rather Dursleyish. Since you sadly have no clue what that means, the Dursley's don't approve of imagination. My source? Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Philosopher's in England).

Now, to compare playing a video game to illegal things like molestation and heroine is rather pathetic. We can, as I put it, "bash" heroine and molestation and thievery and all that other stuff because it is immoral and illegal. To play a video game in which the target audience is 8 years old (though I question this since I know many 16 year olds that play and the level of difficulty actually works for an older age group... but I digress) is absolutely fine. Recent discoveries in the new Pokemon games reveal that they games actually encourage you to bond with your pokemon. This is a lesson in friendship, a moral that has been taught for thousands of years by worse things that Pokemon. Jesus even preached companionship, and I know you can't argue that.

Yes, I caught your typo. My friends from Bulbapedia think I caught you in a lie. I have no comment on that. :)

Here's a scenario. You say that the only way to get more cards is to buy them or win them. I agree. That is the only legal way, and fans of the game support legal cards. Trust me, I played the TCG once. Fake cards get nowhere. Anyways, isn't it the same principal with food? Or money? Or clothes? Or... well, anything. you have to buy it, or recieve it in some way. And if people want to offer their cards as prizes, that's fine. It's a decision that must be agreed on by the two parties.

And no, it's the truth. I'm willing to trust me on this because as you mistakenly pointed out, the TCG apparently comes before the games. A lie. The games came first. But I already explained that.

So, I in fact do know more about the series than you do, understand more about it than you do, and if you are not willing to experience first hand, with no harm to yourself or your loved ones, that which you call evil, then no one can take you seriously.

Oh, and what's wrong with acting? Are you allergic to creativity or something?

Also, before I forget, the guys on Bulbagarden discovered this in your old article.

"I will post my sources at a later date. Most of the materials I drew from are 300 plus year old illuminated manuscripts. I'm afraid you can't just go to your local library and check out a copy, but I have contacted the owners asking if there are any slides, reproductions or translations available for web publication."

This was deciphered as...

"So his bibliography is a 300 year old book that is immpossible to obtain... And he's contacting its 300 year old owners...?

...lol"

Enough said. The quote, by the way, came from Dewgong Rain. Dewgong, if you are reading this, thanks for that. I needed another laugh today.

So, in conclusion, whether you aimed for the card game or not, you hit the entire franchise. And I've seen no one thus far that agree with you. Face it Alex. You can't win on this. As it has been pointed out, you are a christian. You are supposed to be spreading the word of God, not making false stories about the devil and whatnot. You seem to believe in that stuff more than I do. Make of that what you will.

This Ryuutakeshi, The Dragon Warrior, signing off. I'm tired and I need to study my audition lines for HSM 2 some more before I go to bed.

Again, Pokemon hasn't hurt me. How has it hurt you? Answer me this time please.

you, my friend, need to do more research.

first of all, the games came first, got that?

second, the card game isn't "gambling". it's a simple reward policy. you win a battle, you get an award...so how is that bad?

third, the games feature a game corner where you play pokemon-themed gambling games to win coins so that you can buy in-game items and rare pokemon. sure, that sounds like gambling, but really, nobody ever plays the games for long. they spend in-game money to get the coins. nobody cares. and in the newer games, they took out the gambling for a simple matching game because the UK doesn't allow gambling in children's game.

fourth, pokemon is not evil, ok. it never did anything bad to me or force me to do anything wrong to anyone or anything. all it taught me was to have friends and be able to trust them through the pokemon. i hope you learn that not everything new is evil, and not everybody but you is evil.

if you don't like the games, don't play them and don't let your kids play them, ok? it's as simple as that. stay out of our hobby and go to live with the amish in pennsylvania. it's probably the only place you'd fit in anyway.

Oh look, now you're attacking my friends. I know just what to do with you, and I believe this is the first time I've had to pull out my "Internet Troll mask" I've been saving for when a real troll comes around. Here goes... I hope I have what it takes to be convincing...

[troll]You're just some loser who never grew up and lives in your mother's basement, never seeing the light of day![/troll]

Maybe I should just report your blog for abuse instead. Wait... you're allowed to defame individuals under the first amendment. My bad, but I can still take that right away in court.

Anyway, back on topic...

I'm going to write an article on my blog in response to this one, and I really think you should read it and comment. If you don't, that will prove that you are nothing but a windbag.

I'm laughing. I truly am laughing. You're absolutely sad.

Pokemon is not "immoral", as you call it. It does no harm. It won't ruin the life of the children that play it.

As for your comment, Pokemon came as a Game Boy game first, then a cartoon in Japan, then several different manga series, then a card game. You honestly can't do the actual research?

Now, about that Burger King comment you made in your article. I must say, I really find it amusing, that you believe a children's card game will soon lead to gambling and the consumption of alcohol in the restaurants.
To tell the truth, Pokemon cards haven't been relevant in America for many, many years. I doubt they even have special places for the cards anymore.
You think that they'll have smoking and drinking in the Burger King restaurant chain? Don't make me laugh. The entire chain has standards, such as prohibiting smoking in all restaurants. And I'm pretty sure they're not legalized to sell alcohol to minors. And if they were stupid enough to do those things, then they'd get closed down.
Since you're obviously referring to the influence that rooms with these Pokemon Card Tables might have, I don't have much to say there. Other than the fact that it's pathetic how you think a child's actions in their youth really will have that big of an effect on their life as an adult.

You labeled the creators of Pokemon as "the grim forces" behind the series, which, to be honest, makes me think you have some racial issues to work out. They're a bunch of Japanese men who program video games.

You should be thankful that in the games, they don't have the slot machines in the US versions anymore.

The card game usually isn't played with kids wagering their cards. If you want something that does that, go attack Yu-Gi-Oh instead, another Japanese card game that hasn't been relevant.

Your argument that Pokemon uses 3000-year-old imagery could be based on the mythological aspects that Pokemon are based on. I don't really see how a Pokemon based on the Kitsune of Japanese mythology is evil. I don't see how monsters based on Dragons, how that is evil.

Your belief that Pokemon is a "gateway drug", it's correct, in a sense. Indeed, people who play Pokemon will play more video games, will know a bit about other cultures, etc.

And your claim that Pokemon drags people away from better choices...
I've been a Pokemon fan since 1998. I've been on many soccer teams, I've done well in school, I've made friends. Pokemon hasn't taken any of that away from me.

Honestly, this entire fiasco is giving Christians a bad name, considering I know quite a few who have been playing Pokemon as long as I have, and have not been corrupted by it in any way, shape, or form.

In short, you shouldn't be posting all this slander on the internet.
