I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so.

- Abraham Lincoln, quoting one of his campaign speeches in his first inaugural address

The rest of his first inaugural is pretty revealing too. I suggest you read it.

Lincoln also said that if he could save the union without freeing a single slave, he would. When he "freed the slaves" during the Civil War, he only freed the ones in the Confederate states, leaving the slaves in the northern states in bondage. When you really get down to it, he allowed the enslavement of blacks through conventional slavery and whites through military conscription.
Hooray, Liberty!

As far as Republicans being for liberty goes, they seem to have no problem stepping on liberty in foreign countries. Even locally,
Nixon declared "war on drugs," which has resulted in less liberty whether you use illegal drugs or not and Mike "Smokin' Ban" Huckabee signed a smoking ban as governor of Arkansas, removing a business owner's right to allow smoking in that business.
